Who Should Be Going For Drupal 9 Development?

Drupal 9 Development

With the nearing of end-of-life dates for both Drupal 7 version and Drupal 8 version to be scheduled in November 2021, more and more companies need to look forward to upgrading their sites to a robust Drupal 9 platform, which is scheduled to be launched later this year, sometime in the summer of the year 2020. Now, many queries are forthcoming as to why it is necessary for companies to upgrade to Drupal 9, how it can be done, and what is the need for this transition? For many people, it is the most appropriate time to make a decision regarding this upgrade. In the past, it was a considerable effort and required large investments only to go for an upgrade, but it is going to be a different scenario this time with innumerable benefits associated with this transition. Tremendous effort and thought process have been put by the experts to make this transition from Drupal 7 and Drupal 8 versions to Drupal 9 simpler. Let’s see how easily it can be achieved for the people who are readily willing to make this upgrade.

It’s Easy Road Ahead to Upgrade from Drupal 8 to Drupal 9

Drupal 8 to Drupal 9

Due to the design and architecture of Drupal 8, it is already far more convenient to upgrade to Drupal 9. The first thing to consider in this line is that Drupal 9 is built on the same core code of Drupal 8, which makes Drupal 9 Development an easy affair. Since Drupal 9 is not aimed at introducing any new features, Drupal 9 Development doesn’t require alteration of Drupal 8 code. And thus, Drupal 8 sites can readily be upgraded to Drupal 9 without anticipating any major changes that may take place. You need to run a simple audit only to ensure that your site is not relying on any deprecated code and contain any composer dependencies, which are outdated. Certainly, entire content migration or any re-platforming effort seems unlikely.

  • Drupal 9 Module Development: The websites, which have been kept conversant with the incremental updates of Drupal 8, would be fully ready to get set & go if we talk of the core code! Also, there are several websites, which have already been using the workflows or the automated tools for keeping themselves conversant with the code deprecations for the contributed modules. Preferably, for those companies, which have been changing the old versions of these contributed modules constantly with the newer ones with detached deprecated codes, and also eliminating the deprecated codes in the custom codes, and also troubleshooting any conflicts of composer dependency; the up-gradation effort would be simpler.
  • Custom Drupal Development: If you have custom code and you are using those contributed modules, which are not used that much wider, but you have been attentive towards the code deprecations in the custom code and the readiness of the contributed modules, then perhaps you are in a decent point to go for the upgrade. If also you are having quite a strong test-coverage and you do not rely on any of the deprecated 3rdparty dependencies, then also you are in a good positive to move further.

The only thing to watch out for during this transition is that if your Drupal 8 code relies on outdated composer dependencies which are deplored in Drupal 9 being the latest version, then there is a need for doing refactoring to ensure that the old code works in sync with the new composer dependencies.

Is It Possible to Stay on Drupal 8 after Its End of Life?

There shouldn’t be any reason for any company not upgrading from Drupal 8 to Drupal 9. There would be a tiny time window till Nov.2021, within which, the last Drupal 8 release would be supported that too with the security updates. This gives us time to move to Drupal 9. However, after that, you would need to switch over. The time when Drupal 6 had touched its EOL i.e., end-of-life, then there was this LTS or Long-Term-Support program that made it possible for firms to stay on Drupal 6 past its EOL. Now, there are some plans to provide such a Long-Term-Support program for Drupal 7, but not for Drupal 8 as the up-gradation from Drupal 8 to 9 is much simpler. So, if any firm does not make this move, then it will be on their own to deal with any of the security updates as well as other maintenance issues & bug fixes for their Drupal 8 code. This could be a costly affair and would be time-consuming as well, then just working on the upgrade task.
